Location

Bangor University is located between the Menai Straits and the Snowdonia National Park. The location is probably one of the most beautiful university settings in the whole of the UK with panoramic views of mountains, coastline and the sea. Bangor University is situated in one of the UKs smallest and oldest cities with ancient roots traced back to the 6th century and possessing UKs oldest cathedral. While Bangor’s rurality provides a great environment for scholarly reflection, the city is well-connected to the UK’s major metropolitan centres, including a direct fast train links to London in a little over three hours, is close to Manchester and Liverpool and acts as a strategic gateway to Ireland. The city includes Wales’s longest High Street and remains culturally diverse and unique with the Welsh language retaining a high profile within the city and surrounding area.

Bangor University was founded in 1884 through public subscription and voluntary contributions from local people, including farmers and quarrymen. Since this time the university has flourished becoming one of the leading universities within Wales. The Bangor Business School also has a long history, developing initially from the actions of the banker, George Rae, who in 1902 endowed a public lecture series in banking at Bangor that attracted some of the leading thinkers and practitioners of the day.  This lead to the development of the department of economics in the 1920s, which subsequently innovated in the fields of game theory, welfare economics and pioneering in banking and finance education. Bangor was one of the first universities in the UK to offer degrees in banking and the first to offer a Banking MBA. This originality in teaching and educational provision has been matched by significant contributions to banking and finance research.  Bangor has been consistently ranked as one of the top universities in Europe for banking research and in the world Top 25 (Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis). Furthermore, Bangor was also one of the first UK universities to be designated a Centre of Excellence by CBI. These accomplishments have drawn high profile supporters, including leading figures from the world of banking and finance, like Lord Mervyn Davies.

Currently, Bangor Business School is a research focused business school offering a full range of disciplines from undergraduate to doctoral level. Students worldwide are attracted to Bangor Business School by our reputation for high quality and expertise, particularly in the areas of banking and financial services, in which Bangor is a leading European centre and home to one of the largest PhD schools of any business school in the UK. In recent years, staff have conducted high level consultancy work and training for many leading organisations including the European Commission, The World Bank, the UK Treasury, The Financial Conduct Authority and the Competition and Markets Authority.
